Leon Roubos was born in Sparta, Greece in 1959 and passed away at the age of 38.

He completed his bachelor of Arts (painting) degree at the Royal melbourne institute in 1982. Roubos was attracted to aerial depictions of the urban landscape.

His small figures are often little more than shadows on the streets and pavements.Roubos was able to create an impression of loneliness and isolation.

Even when groups of figures are present - as in Pedestrian Crossing - one can hardly imagine them interacting with each other.

In other work Roubos focussed on lone individuals and their urban settings - they seem to be without tangible direction and seem to question the purpose of life.

There is nevertheless a distinct aesthetic quality in Roubos’ work and his actual compositions approach geometric abstraction.

The paintings are carefully designed and evoke much of their impact and mystery through their spatial elements.

ARTISTS’S COMMENTS:

All things have a short temporary physical life and an eternal meta-physical existence.

We know this by the nature of the atom; it forms three dimensional objects which stand for a period of time and then transform into a continuing process of eternity
